Blog Post #1

Before the beginning of class I always thought writing was something one did to communicate a message, story, or instructions.  For example, if you wanted to create an interesting story, or apply for a scholarship you would write something based on a certain criteria.  I knew that writing could be expanded further in some ways, but aside from English class, research papers, applications, etc., I never looked at writing in a professional environment.  I just thought it was something that you could naturally apply to any piece of content.

Now I realized that my previous thoughts about writing was not completely wrong.  It just needed to be modified a little.  I understand that not all the writing skills I learned in high school writing could be applied to the professional field.  Since I am interested in Graphic Design, being able to transfer appropriate learning context, communicating with coworkers, and clients is important.  Figuring out the best method of speaking to other coworkers is also important.  You have to find out if sending an email is allowed, and if it is, what is the proper way to address someone via email.  In one of the stories we read, a man named Allan who not only had a problem with communicating with other members, he also did not know his own role within the workplace.  This is something else that I picked up while taking this English class, you have to know your role within an organization and make sure you are treating other workers as human beings instead of “tools”.

In the paragraph above I have already mentioned quite a few tips I have learned.  I think this class is going pretty well so far.  I like that we discuss the readings in class because some of them are full of academic jargon that doesn’t transfer well to people who are just starting out learning about writing.  I’m not sure how this project will go, but I like that it is being broken down, instead of all it being due at one time.  This is all I have to say so far in blog post #1
